A while back there was an article posted on japanator about an HDD that hooked up to your television and let you play all video formats and external subs. I'm interested in purchasing one. Anyone point to that article or even suggest something similiar? Thanks.

I believe this is the article in question:

Other similar devices are the PopcornHour line of media players (I have the A-110), I think Roku, and others. I really can't say which one is better/the best. Maybe I haven't really searched for an answer, but my biggest question would be which one can play anime MKVs without having issues with subtitles (my A-110 can't play them too well, unsure of other PopcornHour models).

I'd buy one if I didn't already have PS3 Media Server.

I've never really set up a media server to the point where I'm happy with it. Probably because my network connection in the basement is ass. Is it particularly hard to set one up?

It depends. Exactly what type of server are you trying to setup? From a NAS, a laptop, desktop, wired, wireless, etc.

From my experience (wired, using a PC) it's easy as pie. Just download the software (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list) on PC, make sure your PC is connected to the same network as your PS3, open the application and now you can browse and run all video/music/image files from your PS3.

I'll admit it's not flawless, and maybe that's what you mean when you say you're not happy with it. Every now and then I can't seem to get subs to work, and stuff like rewinding/skipping to a particular scene might cause the connection to shit itself. On a positive note, I have seen it work flawlessy on different networks, so I guess it's down to my cheap router. It works just dandy most of the time though, even with 1080p video files, so no need to invest more money.

I bought a Roku not too long ago and I like it. I'm currently using standard AV cables and plan to buy an HDMI cable later. The only "channel" I watch on it is Crunchyroll and it works alright. It took me a while to set up because it wouldn't connect to the internet until I unplugged the Roku then plugged it back in. As far as streaming goes it takes a few seconds (sometimes a minute) for the video to load. Overall I'm happy with it but don't know if I'd recommend it yet, I still need some time with it.

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks a lot. I read a review of it and appearantly it plays mkv and subs with no problems.
